Stars help Simeon teacher trying to raise money for classroom laptops – Chicago Tribune
Simeon Career Academy English teacher Ariam Abraham said she recently watched her students struggle to type their research papers, so she turned to donorschoose.org to raise money for classroom Chromebooks. She thought it was a longshot, but thanks to some star power, she raised about $2,000 in minutes Saturday.
“Most of the people actually left comments with the donations and they were really warm, heartfelt messages of encouragement and best wishes. I started bawling my eyes out, like on the spot, as I was reading them. I was like weeping. I felt so supported and overwhelmed with joy and with gratitude,” Abraham told the Tribune.
“Southside With You” star Tika Sumpter, who is in town filming the Chicago-set political thriller “The Pages,” and Eve Ewing, a Chicago sociologist of education, tweeted about the project and donated to it. Sumpter’s reps did not respond to a Tribune request for comment.
Abraham said she will buy nine Chromebooks with the $1,960 she raised Saturday, and she plans to make three more online requests to get 36-38 computers for her classroom. The second request went online Monday. Most projects posted to DonorsChoose are for $2,000 or less.
“There’s so much more that we can do and I think having laptops that are specifically for them I think is going to be really dignified for them, you know, instead of just using ancient textbooks that a lot of people just kind of throw in front of them and expect them to engage with. It’s something that they’ll be excited to use,” Abraham said.
