Microsoft event, iPhone sales, Tesla Model 3 progress, and more in the week ahead – The Verge

We’re expecting this to be a busy week at The Verge. In addition to our usual coverage, we’ve got a big Microsoft event followed by earnings from Apple, Facebook, Tesla, and others.

Microsoft’s holding a hardware and software event on Tuesday. The promotional #MicrosoftEDU hashtag suggests an education focus that might see Joe Belfiore take the stage in his new role. ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley and our own Tom Warren think that Windows 10 Cloud — Microsoft’s rumored answer to Chrome OS — will feature heavily at the event that could see the announcement of a Chromebook competitor. We’re not, however, expecting to see an ARM-powered Windows laptop announced since those won’t begin shipping until closer to the end of the year.

Microsoft’s coming off a solid financial quarter thanks to its cloud and Office products. Surface revenue was off 26 percent though, driven at least partly by a lack of any significant refreshes to its Surface Pro and Surface Book line. We hope to see that corrected on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s also the day that Apple will release its financials for the first three months of 2017 (Apple’s second fiscal quarter). As usual, all eyes will be on iPhone sales, particularly in China. China was a major growth engine for Apple but revenues there have been declining of late — off 12 percent last quarter compared to the same quarter a year earlier. Apple’s also been making a big deal about services as a new area of growth, so analysts will be keen to measure revenue from services like Apple Pay, iCloud storage, Apple Music, and App Store in the face of declining iPad sales.

A year ago this quarter Apple posted a year-over-year decline in revenue for the first time in 13 years. It was a momentous occasion for the company that had experienced unrivaled growth for more than a decade thanks to a string of hits with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Apple returned to growth last quarter helped by a calendar quirk that allowed the company to count an extra week of sales.

All eyes on the Model 3.

On Wednesday both Facebook and Tesla will report earnings. Facebook’s expected to continue its world-eating growth as it approaches 2 billion monthly active users. Analysts will want to know whether Facebook’s bets on Instagram and WhatsApp are paying off. At last count, regular WhatsApp users had ballooned to 1.2 billion, with 700 million people now regularly checking Instagram each month — a service that’s growing faster than ever. Tesla, meanwhile, already reported record vehicle deliveries for the quarter. Analysts will be watching for details on projected Model S and X deliveries and progress toward Model 3 production. They’ll also be looking at what impact the solar / energy business had on the bottom line as this will be the first full quarter following the SolarCity acquisition.
